Battleship is a game that is played using grids. Each player has two grids and they are asked to place their five different ships in strategic places. Each ship occupies a number of consecutive squares either horizontally or vertically and their sizes range from 2 units to 5. Each player takes turns guessing where they think each ship is located by using the grid system (one column identified using letters and the other column with numbers) and the ship is sunk when every unit on the ship has been hit. The winner is determined by the person who can sink all the ships first.
Battleship using the grid system so it can be a great way to introduce kids to the idea of a coordinate plane and how it works using its vertical and horizontal columns. More than that is gives the students an introduction to the x and y axis and coordinates, ordered pairs and quadrants. Battleship also encourages kids to use critical thinking in determining the placement of their ships and also in guessing where the ships may be located.
Connecting Battleship to technology
Battleship is a board game but its concept of the coordinate grid applies to many different aspects of technology. To start, excel uses a grid system, so by familiarizing the students with a grid system by playing battleship, excel won't seem so foreign. Grids are used in all types of engineering technology. They are all a lot more advanced than the simple one that used in battleship, but playing battleship introduces basic concepts that children need to understand.
This game connects pretty well to the first standard mention on the NETS page. This standard says that teachers should facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity. With battleship, students get to connect the grid system of battleship to the grids they would use in plotting numbers on a graph. It familiarizes them with the coordinate system and also facilitates critical thinking. It especially inspires creativity because the students are in charge of where they can place their ships and they try to do so in a way that is most strategic.
